I’m completely torn and could really use some help.

I’m part of a close friend group of four moms. We all live near each other, our kids play together regularly, and our husbands get along too. It’s one of those “everyone knows everyone” situations, which has usually felt comforting — until now.

I recently found out that one friend in our group is having an affair with another friend’s husband. The wife who is being betrayed has no idea. She is sweet, trusting, and still invites this friend into her home like everything is normal.

A big part of me feels like she deserves to know. Another part of me wants to stay far away from the drama because I don’t want to blow up the whole neighborhood friend group, hurt my own family’s relationships, or get dragged into something that could get really ugly.

I keep asking myself: is staying silent protecting my peace, or is it protecting the wrong people?

Would you tell her, or would you stay out of it?

Dear Stuck in the Messy Middle,

This is not just “mom group drama.” This is the kind of situation no one wants to be in: you did not create the mess, but now you know about it, and now you are carrying it.

Before you decide what to do, I want you to pause and ask a different question: What is my actual role here?

Because exposing a betrayal like this is not a small act. It could also blow up two families, a friend group, children’s routines, and your own household’s sense of safety. That does not mean you should protect the secret. It means you should not rush to become the person who detonates it without first getting very clear.

This situation requires curiosity before certainty.

What do you actually know? What are you assuming? Do you know for sure that the wife does not know? She may know more than you think. She may suspect. She may be choosing not to face it yet. She may be navigating emotional, financial, or family realities that are completely invisible from the outside.

Personally, I would not start by telling the wife. I would start with reaching out to the people participating in the affair. You might start with, “I’m not planning to tell anyone. I don’t feel like that’s my place, and I know I don’t have the whole picture. But I also can’t promise to protect a secret if someone directly affected asks me what I know. I’m not okay being put in that position.”

Then step back. If there is a direct risk to someone’s health, safety, finances, or well-being, that changes the responsibility and may require a more direct conversation. But if this is about betrayal, disclosure, and a complicated friend group, move slowly.

You are not responsible for protecting the affair. You are also not automatically responsible for blowing up the truth.

One of the things I appreciate about Christie’s response is her emphasis on the mindset of Curiosity. In the We Are Resilient™ approach, Curiosity invites us to slow down when we’re under stress and recognize that we may not have the full story. It helps us move away from certainty and reaction, and toward thoughtful, intentional action.

When we discover something that feels morally upsetting, it is easy to slide into Protective Patterns. We may feel pulled toward Attacking (”Someone needs to expose this immediately!”), Avoiding (”I want nothing to do with this.”), or Defending (”It’s not my business.”). Curiosity creates a pause between what we know and what we do next.

Christie models that pause by asking important questions: What do you actually know? What are you assuming? What is your role in this situation? Those questions don’t excuse the betrayal, nor do they minimize the hurt that may be occurring. Instead, they help you make decisions from a grounded place rather than from shock, anger, or fear.

At the same time, Curiosity is not the same as passivity. Being curious doesn’t mean turning away from difficult truths. It means gathering enough understanding to act wisely and with integrity. As Christie notes, there may be circumstances—particularly involving health, safety, or other serious harms—that create a different level of responsibility.

The question that stands out to me is the one you already asked yourself: “Am I protecting my peace, or am I protecting the wrong people?” That’s a courageous question. I might gently add another: “What choice will allow me to look back on this situation and feel that I acted in alignment with my values?”

Sometimes resilience is not about finding the perfect answer. Sometimes it is about staying present with discomfort long enough to make a thoughtful choice.

Whatever you decide, I hope you approach yourself with the same compassion you are trying to extend to everyone else involved. This is a heavy burden to carry, and there are no easy options here.
